Alaska, which was called RussianAmerica before it was sold to the United States of America, joined the union asthe forty-ninth state in 1959. Alaska is now the largest of all the 50 statesof the United States.

It was in 1867that President A. Johnson′s Secretary of State ( 国务卿),Seward bought Alaska from the Russians at a cost of 7.2million. The buying of the huge northern land mass seemed at first somethingfoolishly done. Not only was Alaska difficult to reach, but it was also hard tolive in, and it appeared to have no importance in time of war. Besides, thereare volcanoes there as Alaska lies on the Pacific "ring of fire" ( 火山带 ). In Alaska large treeless areas are covered with snow all the year. For these reasons the buying of Alaska was called "Seward′s Fooly" atthat time.

Doyou find getting up in the morning so difficult that it is painful? This mightbe called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved thateveryone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hourswhen you labour through your work you may say that you′re "hot".That′s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle ofbody temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during theforenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one hasdiscovered why this is so,but it leads to such familiar monologues( 自言自语)as: "Get up, John! You′ll be late for work again! The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energypeak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives

realize what these energy cycles mean, andwhich cycle each member of the family has.

You can′t change yourenergy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you′resleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract(对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than youwant to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job todo early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won′t change your cycle, but you′ll get up steam( 鼓起干劲)and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slowstart which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit onthe edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid thetrouble some search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the after-noon and save tasks requiring moreenergy or concentration for your sharper hours.
